Leadership Traits and Principles
Leadership Principles:(Leadership Education Le1 book definitions:)1.Technically and tactically proficient: Respect is rewarded with this. Before you lead, you must be able to do the job. etc. 2.Know yourself and seek self-improvement: Must be able to honestly evaluate oneself realizing both strength and weaknesses. One who rely on their own strength rather than improving their weaknesses can not be successful. 3.Know your subordinates: Know and understand the behavior of each subordinate in your unit, and how they would react in different situations. This knowledge can prevent future problems. 4.Keep them informed: Its impossible to accomplish a task, with your subordinates having the wrong information. You must constantly keep updating your unit with reasons to why certain chain of events happen. 5.Set the example: MOST IMPORTANT LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLE: As a leader, you set the standards on how your subordinates follow. The way you act, shows how they should act. (If you act like a fool, they would act like one too.) 6.Insure the task is understood, supervised, and accomplished: Where you communicate with a language they will be able to understand. Talk in a clear and concise matter. If you talk to them like babies, that will insult their intelligence. Talk to them in plain language. 7.Training your subordinates as a team: Team work. It helps go after a common goal. To do so, you test, challenge, correct, and encourage each unit. 8. Make sound and Timely decisions: One must be able to rapidly evaluate a situation and make an accurate decision based on the evaluation. (Make a decision that you feel is the best but do not take too long.) 9.Develop a sense of responsibility among your subordinates: mutual respect and confidence can be developed between a leader and a subordinate by assigning tasks and delegating authority. Show faith in your unit members. 10.Employ your command in accordance with its capablities: Know what your subordinates can do, and only give them jobs you know they can do. Like you can't give one fireteam (ex four -five people) a job that would require a whole squad and expect them to do well. 11.Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions: You are responsible for whatever your unit fails to accomplish and for what they do accomplish. NEVER demote, or punish another for your own mistake. |
